In August of 2014 The Amateur Society was born. I was about to begin a new career as a private tutor after leaving the world of finance, and the time was right for me to take a step towards addressing a problem that I had silently bemoaned for years: the heightened level of frivolous conversation that persists in our culture. With the digital era came unprecedented access to information and opportunities for distraction along with it. While many take advantage of this incredible opportunity to research and seek the truth, more often than not when presented with the enormity of the task at hand most will outsource their learning – even their beliefs – to those who claim expertise. Books could be written on this ‘cult of expertise’, but that is for another time.
It became clear to me that I needed to create a venue where conversations could expand to touch important questions concerning worldview, philosophy, and current events. In the first year we met every other week, and sometimes there were just two or three of us. As global economic and geopolitical instability grew, we began meeting every week and rotating sessions between current events and general philosophy. Our goal is to create an open environment where honest, respectful, and serious conversations can be maintained and challenging questions can be asked. It’s worked out great so far, and we’d love for you to participate with us in our weekly meetings.
Please drop me a line via email or Skype if you have any questions and if you’d like to join our meeting tonight.
