SER 190 – Dr. Rich Petras And Fred Hether – Take Control Of Your Health

2019.06.18 SER

Big Pharma is one of the most powerful industries in the world. The global revenue for pharmaceuticals was over $1 trillion in 2014. But nowhere else in the world do the drug and medical device industries have as much power and make as much money as in the U.S.

Six of the top 10 pharmaceutical companies for 2017 have their headquarters in the U.S. These include Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, Merck, Gilead, Amgen and AbbVie.

But only 28 percent of Americans have a good opinion of Big Pharma. In fact, Big Pharma is the second most hated industry in America. It’s right behind the tobacco industry and the oil, gas and chemical industry.

Big Pharma is also the biggest defrauder of the Federal Government under the False Claims Act, according to consumer watchdog group Public Citizen.

The industry has a history of fraud, bribery, lawsuits and scandals. Despite criminal charges and fines, Big Pharma companies continue to do business.

By 2021, Big Pharma profits for prescription drugs are expected to reach $610 billion. Medical devices are also lucrative.

The U.S. makes about $148 billion, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce.

That’s about half of the world’s share of the market. Americans spent an all-time high of $457 billion on prescription drugs in 2015.

And drug prices continue to rise. Consulting firm Segal Consulting expects drug prices to rise 11.6 percent in 2017. This estimate is for Americans under the age of 65.

In contrast, wages are only expected to rise 2.5 percent. This means many Americans won’t be able to afford their medications. Information about the pharmaceutical industry found here.

Podcast: The Amateur Society – Assumptions Of The Scientific Method – 06.17.2019

2019.06.18 tAS

Welcome back to The Amateur Society for another conversation about the philosophy of science! This conversation examines the definition of the scientific method and the assumptions that are made in its application. In our society many consider science as the primary or even the only way of accessing meaningful truth. In reality, there are important limitations on the scientific method that have a significant impact on our worldviews. Unfortunately, this isn’t an area that gets covered in the standard course of education, but with a bit of determined critical thinking we can all strengthen our perspectives on this critical subject. Thanks again for joining us on The Amateur Society!

How A Really Good Man Ends Really Bad – Pastor Tim Dilena – Times Square Church – 06.09.2019

2019.06.18

The mentions of Barnabas in the New Testament provide an interesting framework for understanding the importance of precision in our walk with the Lord. There was a sharp contention between Paul and Barnabas, and they went their separate ways in ministry. The final mention of Barnabas was an incident when Paul rebuked Peter for eating exclusively with Jewish believers to the exclusion of the Gentiles. Barnabas joined Peter in that error. An important lesson for us is that even a minor deviation, if left uncorrected, can result in us ending up a long way off from our calling. Barnabas began by encouraging Paul and guiding him into ministry by vouching for him when the other apostles were wary of his past. We must make sure to be steadfast in our encouragement of others and in our desire for Godly correction so that we can remain on the right path.

When Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. For before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself from the Gentiles because he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision group. The other Jews joined him in his hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy even Barnabas was led astray.

Guest Post: We Can’t Just Look The Other Way Anymore – Pastor Mike Spaulding

see-no-evil

By Dr. Mike Spaulding:

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. Edmund Burke

The quote above has been mentioned many times in many different contexts. It is part of a longer letter that Burke wrote to his friend Thomas Mercer in 1770. The entire thought that Burke sought to express is a powerful reminder of the evil that will befall any people who fail to swiftly and with much malice, destroy the evil actions of those who would by those actions enslave a free people in tyranny. Burke said:

Whilst men are linked together, they easily and speedily communicate the alarm of any evil design. They are enabled to fathom it with common counsel, and to oppose it with united strength. Whereas, when they lie dispersed, without concert, order, or discipline, communication is uncertain, counsel difficult, and resistance impracticable. Where men are not acquainted with each other’s principles, nor experienced in each other’s talents, nor at all practiced in their mutual habitudes and dispositions by joint efforts in business; no personal confidence, no friendship, no common interest, subsisting among them; it is evidently impossible that they can act a public part with uniformity, perseverance, or efficacy. In a connection, the most inconsiderable man, by adding to the weight of the whole, has his value, and his use; out of it, the greatest talents are wholly unserviceable to the public. No man, who is not inflamed by vain-glory into enthusiasm, can flatter himself that his single, unsupported, desultory, unsystematic endeavors, are of power to defeat the subtle designs and united cabals of ambitious citizens. When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall, one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle.[1]

Podcast: On the Objective – The Equal Justice Tour – Matt Szyszkiewicz & Mark Trump – 06.11.2019

2019.06.11 OtO

Fellow American Patriots,

This is a call to action. Our great Constitutional Republic has once again entered an hour when our actions will determine the course of future generations. We are faced with a clear choice: either we will stand boldly for the restoration of the rule of law or our inaction will pave the way for the slide into tyranny that has destroyed innumerable lives and dreams across human history.

The Fourteenth Amendment to the US Constitution insists that every American citizen must be treated equally under the law. Brothers and sisters, we have reached this moment because we have seen our Constitution shredded, discarded, and trampled upon by those who swore an oath to defend and to uphold it.

Restoring equal justice is not a political issue. Rich or poor. Man or woman. Black or white. Big or small. Equal justice is for all. You have seen and felt this injustice for many years. Time after time the rich, powerful, and connected have flagrantly flaunted the laws of our nation while the rights of regular Americans have been incontrovertibly infringed.

Without equal justice the future belongs only to tyrants. Without equal justice our children and grandchildren can never hope to be free. Without equal justice the American dream will be buried gleefully by those who have longed endlessly and worked tirelessly to destroy the fabric of our society.

We do not accept that future.

We will not leave our families that inheritance.

We will not allow American freedom to die on our watch.

Join us on the Equal Justice Tour: a peaceful, lawful assembly of Americans exercising our First Amendment rights and insisting that equal justice for all be restored in this nation.

God bless you all, and may God bless the United States of America.

Podcast: The Amateur Society – Socratic Thought Experiments – 06.10.2019

2019.06.11

Welcome back to The Amateur Society for a conversation about an important component of practical philosophy: thought experiments. While sitting down and running through systematic metaphysics and other complex topics is not going to be feasible for everyday amateurs like us, we can still garner a lot of insight out of performing thought experiments. Why did a decision get made or why did a situation play out the way it did? Asking these questions about ourselves and others allows us to gain insight into more general principles that we can use to better understand our own worldviews and the world around us. Thanks again for joining us on The Amateur Society!
