What Is It Going To Take For Me To Change? – Pastor Tim Dilena – Times Square Church – 05.31.2020

Accuse

Despite our tendency to clamor for control, we are all going to be led by someone. Should we claim to lead ourselves, we soon find that we are really simply subservient to our own understandings and desires. That path never ends in good places. When we submit ourselves to the ideology of others, we arrive at a place where resentment, deception, and destruction build until an inevitable breaking arises. Our only option is to be led by God. Jesus wants to transform our hearts and to take His place as the Lord of our lives. He is able to do so! If we want to see change, justice, righteousness, and the defeat of evil in this generation then we must put our faith and trust in God and follow the leading of the Holy Spirit. Often it is only through pain that leads us to being open to change.

Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven,
Whose sin is covered.
Blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute iniquity,
And in whose spirit there is no deceit.

When I kept silent, my bones grew old
Through my groaning all the day long.
For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me;
My vitality was turned into the drought of summer. Selah
I acknowledged my sin to You,
And my iniquity I have not hidden.
I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,”
And You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah

For this cause everyone who is godly shall pray to You
In a time when You may be found;
Surely in a flood of great waters
They shall not come near him.
You are my hiding place;
You shall preserve me from trouble;
You shall surround me with songs of deliverance. Selah

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will guide you with My eye.
Do not be like the horse or like the mule,
Which have no understanding,
Which must be harnessed with bit and bridle,
Else they will not come near you.

Many sorrows shall be to the wicked;
But he who trusts in the Lord, mercy shall surround him.
Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, you righteous;
And shout for joy, all you upright in heart!

Psalm 32:1-11

Podcast: The Amateur Society – How Do Worldviews Change? – 05.14.2018

Thinker

Welcome back to The Amateur Society for a conversation about how our worldviews and beliefs change! Who can say that 100% of the beliefs they have held have been accurate? Given that we have been wrong before, what are we wrong about now? Is it better for us when our worldview changes in response to internal or external motivation? What are the consequences of not actively engaging our own worldview? What are the catastrophic risks of ignoring our worldview? These questions and more highlight this insightful episode of The Amateur Society!

Podcast: The Amateur Society – Mastering Flexibility And Adaptation

Flexibility

Following up on last week’s discussion of change and growth, we now turn to the related concepts of flexibility and adaptation. Change and growth are certainly necessary ideas for us to grapple with, but in order to understand this dynamic we must also understand our threshold for change. From a worldview perspective, flexibility and adaptation match this concept nicely.

What do flexibility and adaptation mean in this context? Where are the lines for ‘not flexible enough’ and ‘too flexible’ in the process of change? How are those lines determined? What do differing worldviews have to say about this concept? Why should we care?

Podcast: The Amateur Society – Mastering Change And Growth

Growth

We are living in exponential times. Sleepwalk through your life for even just a few months and you’ll awake in yet another different world. In past discussions we have looked at the idea of change, and perhaps it’s time to revisit these ideas. We are continually changing internally and externally, within ourselves and relative to our surroundings. Change contains in it the potential for danger and uncertainty, but if we aren’t capable of navigating through a several different multifaceted dimensions of change simultaneously then we will be swiftly overwhelmed.

How do we face change? Is change the only constant? What is the difference between change and growth? How can we tell the difference and orient ourselves toward growth? What role does failure play in the growth process? Who is responsible for growth? How can we – as amateurs – properly aspire toward mastery of these fundamental ideas?

uncertainty

Amateurs,

Our regular open call will take place tonight, Monday 9/12, at 8:00pm eastern time via Skype. To join in please send us a contact request on Skype by searching for our account name amateursociety. If you have any questions or need clarification, please drop us a line on the contact page here or email us directly at amateursociety@gmail.com.

From day to day now we encounter events and information that are perplexing, challenging, and even frightening at times. With Hillary Clinton’s health coming into the spotlight a new level of uncertainty has arrived in the Presidential election. With a dramatic bond market selloff at the end of last week confidence in central banks has taken another hit. How do we analyze important questions and possibilities in a world where it seems like anything is possible? In these challenging times it is more important than ever to understand what your ultimate foundation rests on. Without such an understanding and a robust worldview you can quickly find yourself without a footing in a world that can – and seemingly does – change overnight in unpredictable ways.

Bring your questions to our open forum and join us for another lively meeting of The Amateur Society. We look forward to having you with us!
