All Stirred Up – Pastor David Ham – Times Square Church – 07.14.2019

Cyrus Restoring the Vessels of the Temple

When the Lord moved Cyrus to decree the rebuilding of the House of the Lord at Jerusalem not everyone returned from captivity to participate in that restoration. Only those who were stirred up, moved in their spirits by God, took part. The fullness of joy, beauty, power, and blessings that we require to make a difference in this generation will only be found when we are stirred by the Holy Spirit. Have we become closed off by our own desires and bickering from hearing that still small voice? Where is the overwhelming passion for the Lord and for what Jesus has done for us? Is your spirit stirred up today, or have the cares of this world weighed you down? Brothers and sisters, we must be filled anew and moved in our spirits for the sake of the generation around us that is perishing without God. Now is the time to have your enthusiasm for the Kingdom of God rekindled!

Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and also put it in writing, saying,

Thus says Cyrus king of Persia:

All the kingdoms of the earth the Lord God of heaven has given me. And He has commanded me to build Him a house at Jerusalem which is in Judah. Who is among you of all His people? May his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem which is in Judah, and build the house of the Lord God of Israel (He is God), which is in Jerusalem. And whoever is left in any place where he dwells, let the men of his place help him with silver and gold, with goods and livestock, besides the freewill offerings for the house of God which is in Jerusalem.

Then the heads of the fathers’ houses of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests and the Levites, with all whose spirits God had moved, arose to go up and build the house of the Lord which is in Jerusalem.

Podcast: On the Objective – Conversations That Sharpen In A Dulling World – Sam Johnston – 07.23.2018

TSR

Join your host Steven Menking as he welcomes back Sam Johnston of The Sharpening Report to discuss the latest trends and dynamics in our nation. From the spiritual to the emotional, many core areas of our lives have been warped by events and media portrayals to the point where many conversations – even with loved ones – are simply not possible without inviting acrimony. How should we handle such situations? These times call for astute questions, soft answers, and bold proclamations of truth. A balancing of these factors must be guided by the Holy Spirit. Thanks for joining us On the Objective!

Podcast: The Amateur Society – Understanding Disappointment – 07.16.2018

disappointment

Welcome back to The Amateur Society for a conversation about disappointment. We all deal with failure and disappointment during our lives, so it’s helpful to understand the dynamics a bit more. Starting with the dictionary definition the group discusses the experience of disappointment and how it can be either a negative or a positive depending on the time frame, context, and attitude that we have towards it. Ultimately we examine how worldview comes into the consideration. Thanks again for joining us on The Amateur Society!

Podcast: The Amateur Society – Understanding Expectation – 07.09.2018

Waiting

Welcome back to The Amateur Society for a conversation about expectation! We all have a standard idea of what it means to expect something or to have an expectation, but when we ask a few questions about the definition, word usage, context, and worldview applications the topic opens up into a deep and interesting area of inquiry. We have greatly enjoyed these discussions over the past month about celebration, frustration, curiosity, and now expectation, and we thank you for your participation and feedback. Podcast: The Amateur Society – Understanding Frustration – 06.18.2018

frustration

Welcome back to The Amateur Society for another interesting conversation. This time we turn to the subject of frustration. What is it? What other experiences and traits is it connected to? What are the impacts of frustration? What do our worldviews imply about how frustration affects us? We all experience frustration to one extent or another, so it’s a good idea to ask meaningful questions about it and the role that it plays in our emotional lives. Thanks again for joining us on this episode of The Amateur Society!

Steven Menking Joins Parker J. Cole To Talk About Love – 02.03.2018

PJC
Listen live at 2:00pm Eastern Time on Saturday 02.03.2018: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/pjcmedia/2018/02/03/a-second-hand-emotion–the-parker-j-cole-show

Who can forget the iconic song by Tina Turner who asks a question, “What’s love got to do with it? What’s love but a second-hand emotion.”

Of course, my fondest memory is of Angela Bassett portraying the famous rock star singing this song in the movie of the same title. After all the events portrayed in the movie, the movie ends with her asking the very question of what does love have to do with anything? I love the beat and rhythm of this song but I have to wonder if love is a second-hand emotion? Is it something borrowed from the intensity of physical attraction or sexual urges? Is love a leftover from evolutionary processes of survival?

In today’s society, love or the idea of love has been used to protect the guilty, to hurt the innocent, to manipulate, to control, to suppress — at least that’s what it seems like. So, when Tina Turner sings: “Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken” do we simply do away with this second-hand emotion?

Podcast: The Amateur Society – The Reality Of Pure Evil – 10.30.2017

evil_eyes

The bankrupt philosophy of postmodernism notwithstanding, pain is real. So is evil. Everything isn’t just subjective experience subject to an infinite variety of interpretation. We spend so much of our lives fleeing from these things that we don’t necessarily understand what they are. A properly constructed worldview cannot fail to address these topics. Let’s examine the sobering nature of our reality by asking clarifying and provocative questions. If we don’t challenge ourselves at this time, then we will end up being overwhelmed when forced to confront these realities in an unavoidable way.

With the breaking news out of Las Vegas overnight of the horrific mass casualty event emotions of all sorts are running high today. Fear, anger, bitterness, grief, sorrow, mourning, confusion, heartbreak, and many more have been stirred up in the consciousness of Americans. Let’s take some time this evening to look beyond the politics, blame, and castigation to ask a question that demands to be addressed but that typically is overshadowed by other concerns: what is life worth? What do our worldviews tell us about what life actually is, where it comes from, and what its ultimate value is? Something instinctive tells us that life is valuable and worth preserving, so how can people – ourselves included – come to a place where we see life as something that would be better off eliminated?

God bless you today as you consider these serious matters and as we continue to pray for all those impacted by this latest horror.
