Podcast: The Amateur Society – Memorial Day And The Purpose Of Memory – 05.28.2018

Flags

Welcome back to The Amateur Society for a conversation about Memorial Day, when we remember those who gave their lives for the freedoms that we enjoy, and the purpose of memory in general. This annual remembrance has turned into something disconnected from its original purpose, but our desire here is to honor the fallen and to briefly discuss the importance and role of memory in determining the course and direction of our lives. Thanks for joining us on this episode of The Amateur Society!

Podcast: The Amateur Society – September 11th And The Emotional Content Of Memory – 09.11.2017

911

16 years ago the world was transformed. I was 13. In many worldviews that age signifies the beginning of the transition from child to adult. Certain events have an immediate, massive historical impact at all levels. Tonight we will remember perhaps the most significant event of my lifetime as measured by the collective emotion of memory. Walking around New York City today I was struck by conflicting senses of solemnity and normalcy. It led me to ask a couple questions that we will discuss tonight. What determines the emotional content and strength of a memory? How do our worldviews inform our approach to painful memories in particular?
