Podcast: The Amateur Society – Assumptions Of The Scientific Method – 06.17.2019

2019.06.18 tAS

Welcome back to The Amateur Society for another conversation about the philosophy of science! This conversation examines the definition of the scientific method and the assumptions that are made in its application. In our society many consider science as the primary or even the only way of accessing meaningful truth. In reality, there are important limitations on the scientific method that have a significant impact on our worldviews. Unfortunately, this isn’t an area that gets covered in the standard course of education, but with a bit of determined critical thinking we can all strengthen our perspectives on this critical subject. Podcast: The Amateur Society – Socratic Thought Experiments – 06.10.2019

2019.06.11

Welcome back to The Amateur Society for a conversation about an important component of practical philosophy: thought experiments. While sitting down and running through systematic metaphysics and other complex topics is not going to be feasible for everyday amateurs like us, we can still garner a lot of insight out of performing thought experiments. Why did a decision get made or why did a situation play out the way it did? Asking these questions about ourselves and others allows us to gain insight into more general principles that we can use to better understand our own worldviews and the world around us. Podcast: The Amateur Society – Free Will – 06.05.2019

2019.06.05

Welcome back to The Amateur Society for a conversation about a critical topic in philosophy and life: free will. The idea of the extent of our freedom is a worldview-driven concept that has been pondered for millennia. However, despite its significance it isn’t a part of common inquiry except in unique circumstances. Are we actually free as it seems? How would we know? What would the consequences be of either conclusion? We hope that you enjoy this stimulating discussion. Thanks again for joining us on The Amateur Society!

Podcast: The Amateur Society – Getting Help Making Tough Decisions – 05.06.2019

2019.05.07

Welcome back to The Amateur Society for another discussion about decision making! When do we enlist the help of external resources to make decisions? Should we seek advice and counsel more from open source info and other people? What difficulties may arise from including others in our decision making? This conversation explores many important questions that motivate us to be more thoughtful about our decisions so that we’re less inclined to be on autopilot. We must own the responsibility for our decisions, so we must practice thinking about them clearly. Thanks again for joining us on The Amateur Society!

Podcast: The Amateur Society – Probability Is Hard – 04.22.2019

2019.04.22

Welcome back to The Amateur Society for a discussion of probability and how we handle the uncertainty of future events by hedging our bets. Have you ever said that something was possible, likely, or almost certain? Are their actual probabilities associated with those statements, or are we just guessing? It’s a genuine challenge to unpack even relatively simple probabilities, so we have to use our instincts honed by experience in complex situations. Algorithms can perform better than humans at assessing probability, but everything tends to break down when rare events are considered. Thanks again for joining us on The Amateur Society!

Podcast: The Amateur Society – Fire At Notre Dame – 04.15.2019

2019.04.16

Welcome back to The Amateur Society for a discussion about the fire at the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris. This iconic structure has stood for almost a millennium, and the footage of the roof burning and the spire collapsing was shocking. Given that large portions of the building are still intact, what does this tell us about the critical essence of such a place? In moments like these we should ask additional questions. Why do we immediately perceive Notre Dame as significant? What would different worldviews say about the significance of the structure? How can we be more thoughtful in general instead of only being forced to reflect by dramatic events if at all? Thanks again for joining us on The Amateur Society!
