Podcast: The Amateur Society – The Divergent Worlds Of Artificial Intelligence – 12.04.2017

NeuralNetworks

Tonight we are moving back into the realm of technology to again cover what’s happening in the field of artificial intelligence. First, let’s try to unpack what we actually mean when we use that term. Second, let’s look at some real world happenings and forecasts in this critical area of technology and life. Last, let’s examine what our worldviews have to say about the topic. There is a great deal of nuance and complexity in this subject, so we’re going to have a non-technical, high level conversation so that all can participate.

Podcast: The Amateur Society – The Art Of Listening – 11.27.2017

EarPainting.jpg

The importance of listening is an idea that has been repeated so much that it is now a cliche and a common trope for observational comedians discussing relationships. Nonetheless, we can – and must – understand that there is great value, insight, and wisdom in the tried and true sayings. Let’s take a closer look at listening. What does it mean to listen? What makes someone a “good listener”? How much of listening is actually verbal and sound based? Is listening enough to help us solve problems and make better decisions? What do various worldviews say about listening?

Podcast: The Amateur Society – How Important Is Being Thankful? – 11.21.2017

LAstSupper

Thanksgiving is this week, bringing with it the usual entourage of family, overeating, and early Christmas decorations. This is a great opportunity to spend some time thinking about the dynamic of thankfulness. What does it mean to be thankful? How can demonstrations of thankfulness differ? Why should we value thankfulness? What can take place if we aren’t thankful? Can we be too thankful in certain situations? How important is being thankful?

Podcast: The Amateur Society – What Happened To Leadership? – 11.13.2017

Washington Crossing the Delaware River by Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze
USA, New York State, New York City, Metropolitan Museum of Art, 19th century

Leadership was once a primary aim of individuals and societies. Now it seems to be relegated to stale-coffee-smelling business conferences filled with tired buzzwords that match the unshakeable feeling that the mildew smell is only being overpowered by the industrial strength cleaning supplies that must be applied between dusk and dawn every day. What happened to leadership? What has filled the void left behind by its absence? Where are the leaders worth following? Can anyone become a leader?
