Podcast: The Amateur Society – Chaos Theory – 09.16.2019

2019.09.17

Welcome back to The Amateur Society for another stimulating conversation! This week we are examining an interesting branch of math and physics, chaos theory. In certain dynamic, complex systems small changes to initial conditions can lead to vastly different outcomes. This understanding has significant implications even at a personal, philosophical, and worldview level. Please be encouraged that the small decisions we make do make a difference. Let’s be more thoughtful about everything. Thanks again for joining us on The Amateur Society!

Podcast: The Amateur Society – Poincaré Recurrence, Cosmology, And Worldviews – 11.12.2018

DeepSpace

Welcome back to The Amateur Society for another conversation about cosmology. The group explores the standard model of the universe, describes the worldview implications of an absolute beginning to space-time, and discusses the interesting concept of Poincaré recurrence. These conversations are always a favorite because they exist at the intersection of worldview, science, math, and philosophy. They are fertile ground for interesting reflection and inquiry. Thanks again for joining us on The Amateur Society!

Podcast: The Amateur Society – Stephen Hawking, Science, And Philosophy – 03.19.2018

HorseheadNebula

The death of Stephen Hawking brings to an end the latest epoch of physics and cosmology. While there will be extensive continuity, we must understand that our understanding of physics and the universe is – when properly performed – expanding and developing. What will future generations highlight about this particular period in which the triumph of science over philosophy was espoused? What is the proper approach to understanding the interaction between science and philosophy? How do we evaluate hypotheses when we don’t have the empirical tools to recreate their conditions? Why haven’t we been able to formulate a grand unified theory? How does worldview inevitably intrude on these discussions? The group addresses these questions and more on the latest installment of The Amateur Society! To join in these discussions please send a contact request to amateursociety on Skype and hop on our calls at 8:00pm Eastern every Monday.

The Amateur Society: Information Theory And Digital Physics

DigitalPhysics

Amateurs,

Our regular open call will take place tonight, Tuesday 6/20, at 8:00pm eastern time via Skype. To join in please send us a contact request on Skype by searching for our account name amateursociety. If you have any questions or need clarification, please drop us a line on the contact page here or email us directly at amateursociety@gmail.com. These weekly meetings can be found on Spreaker, YouTube, and on iTunes via the Podcast app.

Following up on our series of technological discussions, tonight we will zoom all the way out to talk about what the digital age is potentially revealing about the structure of the universe. We have discussed digital physics in previous conversations, but now is an excellent time to revisit these ideas. Once we get this backdrop in place we will then come back in for a closer look at blockchain technologies and the cryptocurrency space.

Join us for another engaging and informative conversation tonight at 8:00pm!

God bless,

Steven

Podcast: The Amateur Society – Life Is A Symphony

Symphony

We often overlook the importance of music in our lives. The structures of sound and pattern are so interwoven with our consciousness that we simply breeze past them without bothering to fully investigate or appreciate their significance. This discussion provides an opportunity to reflect on what music is and what functions it serves. We typically don’t ask these questions on a regular basis, but upon further examination they prove to be immensely valuable and inextricably intertwined with several of the most important aspects of our existence.

Join us as we investigate the heart of music and it’s overall impact from physics to sociology. Why is music among the most primordial aspects of human culture? Why do we gravitate towards certain types of music? How can we better understand and esteem its value? What impact could a broader and deeper perspective of music have? Is life truly a symphony?

The Amateur Society: Revising Reality From Fundamental Cosmology To The Presidential Election

Background.jpg

Amateurs,

Our regular open call will take place tonight, Monday 10/24, at 8:00pm eastern time via Skype. To join in please send us a contact request on Skype by searching for our account name amateursociety. If it seems like the unorthodox and the unbelievable are becoming daily occurrences in the political realm, then surely we can at least know that our fundamental understanding of physics and the universe is solid and constant… Right? It turns out that new research is calling into question the standard model conclusion that the universe is expanding at an accelerating rate, a strange result that astronomers and physicists have attributed to ‘dark energy’ – a mysterious quantity that we can’t describe or explain except by saying that the expansion of the universe is accelerating and something must be causing it so we have to give whatever it is a name. Current science across many disciplines is not as dogmatic as it would appear. Contrary to popular belief, the science itself is never settled.

Marginal evidence for cosmic acceleration from Type 1a supernovae

Tonight we’re going to open with this scientific discussion before continuing into what this implies from philosophical and worldview perspectives. From there we will transition into the ever-shifting reality of the Presidential election and discuss the mechanism through which perception determines reality. Who is more enthusiastic? Who is likely to win? What will the ultimate outcome be? Even though we don’t know for sure it isn’t going to stop us from analyzing the possibilities.

Bring your questions to our open forum and join us for another lively meeting of The Amateur Society. We look forward to having you with us. Stay safe and God bless!

What Does Digital Physics Have To Do With Hanjin Shipping?

DigitalPhysics.jpg

No, fellow amateurs, I have not delved into a John Nash style madness a la ‘A Beautiful Mind’. However, I may in fact out myself as a quintessential nerd by admitting that when the movie came out and I was 13 I wept at the loss of intellectual genius portrayed in the film. I’d like to blame hormone imbalances due to puberty, but instead I’ll just own up to it. After all, I’m going to be writing about digital physics here, so we’re getting into some unorthodox, nerdy material in any case.

What is digital physics?

In brief, it is the theory that the fundamental component of our current reality is information. Not stuff – matter and mass – not energy – frequency and vibration – but information. Some have used this idea to argue that the entire universe is a computer simulation. I know what you’re thinking…
