In our first open call of 2018 we will begin by reviewing the mission, purpose, and philosophy of The Amateur Society for new amateurs! The remainder of the show will cover topics of interest and trends for 2018 that we expect to unfold throughout the year. Last year we made many predictions about events in a variety of arenas, but this year we will focus less on timelines and arbitrary benchmarks. Instead we will focus more on systems, processes, and key values that we see impacting both priorities and properties of impactful decisions. What this year has in store is anyone’s guess, but the smart money is on it being another wild ride.

Fear. This subject – and even the word itself – is most often low on our day to day list of conversation topics. Some of us prefer to avoid it because there are lingering fearful uncertainties that we don’t feel capable of addressing. Others may just want to avoid admitting to or displaying fear because it would project weakness. Many simply don’t understand that fear is much more dynamic, potent, and even subtle than we might initially believe. A few people even relish fear, whether their own or that of others. Let’s face our fear and unpack this powerful concept in classic Amateur Society fashion.

16 years ago the world was transformed. I was 13. In many worldviews that age signifies the beginning of the transition from child to adult. Certain events have an immediate, massive historical impact at all levels. Tonight we will remember perhaps the most significant event of my lifetime as measured by the collective emotion of memory. Walking around New York City today I was struck by conflicting senses of solemnity and normalcy. It led me to ask a couple questions that we will discuss tonight. What determines the emotional content and strength of a memory? How do our worldviews inform our approach to painful memories in particular?

Over the past month we have discussed change and growth, flexibility and adaptation, as well as tenacity and perseverance. We will now turn our conversation to the ideas of curiosity and commitment. How can we develop these aspects of our character? What will happen if we do not foster these traits? Is it possible to have too much curiosity and commitment? Where is the balance of these concepts in our society currently?

The Amateur Society Blog Turns 1!

AS Map

Greetings fellow amateurs!

Exactly one year ago today I made my first post on this blog for The Amateur Society. We had been having meetings since the summer of 2014, but at the suggestions of my compatriots I put this WordPress site together. What an awesome year it has been! It’s a great time to be writing, prognosticating, and communicating, and I’m looking forward to the next year. To God be the glory!

I’m a numbers guy, so here are some statistics:

I’d also like to thank our readers from 76 countries! Shout outs in alphabetical order:

After discussing change and growth as well as flexibility and adaptation, it’s now time to turn to the other end of the spectrum. What are tenacity and perseverance? What prevents us from having the tenacity and perseverance that we need in order to overcome the obstacles that seemingly never tire of standing in our way? Is it possible to have too much tenacity and perseverance? How can we develop these vital characteristics?

Following up on last week’s discussion of change and growth, we now turn to the related concepts of flexibility and adaptation. Change and growth are certainly necessary ideas for us to grapple with, but in order to understand this dynamic we must also understand our threshold for change. From a worldview perspective, flexibility and adaptation match this concept nicely.

What do flexibility and adaptation mean in this context? Where are the lines for ‘not flexible enough’ and ‘too flexible’ in the process of change? How are those lines determined? What do differing worldviews have to say about this concept? Why should we care?

We are living in exponential times. Sleepwalk through your life for even just a few months and you’ll awake in yet another different world. In past discussions we have looked at the idea of change, and perhaps it’s time to revisit these ideas. We are continually changing internally and externally, within ourselves and relative to our surroundings. Change contains in it the potential for danger and uncertainty, but if we aren’t capable of navigating through a several different multifaceted dimensions of change simultaneously then we will be swiftly overwhelmed.

How do we face change? Is change the only constant? What is the difference between change and growth? How can we tell the difference and orient ourselves toward growth? What role does failure play in the growth process? Who is responsible for growth? How can we – as amateurs – properly aspire toward mastery of these fundamental ideas?

Join us for a thought-provoking and informative forum where we will investigate these questions and more. Thanks in advance for your time and participation!

God bless,

Steven
