Podcast: The Amateur Society – The Bed Of Procrustes – Matters Ontological – 03.13.2020

03.13.2020 AS

Welcome back to The Amateur Society for another set of aphorisms from The Bed of Procrustes by Nassim Nicholas Taleb. Our goal in this series is to demonstrate that philosophy is neither boring nor unapproachable. Everyone must engage with our own thoughts and dig deeper to discover things about ourselves, our relationships, and the world around us. Join us as Steven goes through important topics in practical philosophy and demonstrates how any amateur can begin to access more challenging materials. Thanks again for joining us on The Amateur Society!

Podcast: The Amateur Society – The Bed Of Procrustes Part 1 – 02.04.2020

02.04.2020 AS

Welcome back to The Amateur Society for a new direction after an extended absence! Fatherhood is fantastic, and it has led me to think about how we should structure our approach here at The Amateur Society. In our first series of 2020 we will model an ongoing philosophical inquiry to demonstrate that everyone can develop the skills necessary to ask meaningful, challenging questions and to dig in. We begin with a handful of aphorisms from Nassim Taleb’s The Bed of Procrustes. This will be our approach for the next several sessions, and we hope you enjoy the free-ranging exploration of many critical ideas. Thanks again for joining us on The Amateur Society!

Podcast: The Amateur Society – Medicine, Uncertainty, And Genetic Manipulation – 08.27.2018

Hippocrates.jpg

Welcome back to The Amateur Society for a conversation about biology, healing, and medicine. At some level it can seem like medicine is simple, but typically it is only with specialized training or personal experience that we realize how complex, mysterious, and uncertain the human body can be when it is not functioning properly. Join us for a conversation about our understanding of the current state of the practice of medicine and a look ahead to some of the major trends that the future has in store. Thanks again for joining us on The Amateur Society!

Podcast: The Amateur Society – Historical Uncertainty And The Future – 09.19.2017

RosettaStone

I attended the True Legends conference this past weekend, and it struck me that we don’t ask the right questions about history. This vast detriment creates a profound level of uncertainty and ignorance that leads to powerlessness. What proportion of our knowledge about history is accurate? How much are we missing? How could we even estimate the size of the gaps in our understanding of both natural and human history?

After spending a month looking into blockchain technology, tonight we will turn back to the dynamics of the current events landscape. In many ways it seems like we are stuck in the same place with respect to the dominant narratives, trends, and themes. In other ways we’re seeing some material developments on key issues. How do we know which version of current events is accurate? Is President Trump on a fast track to impeachment or an overhaul that leads to prosperity? Stepping back, how should we structure our analysis through the lens of uncertainty. This poorly understood area of decision making and critical thinking rarely gets attention because of its seemingly arcane underpinnings in probabilistic mathematics. However, it is both useful and necessary to understand core principles about uncertainty so that we can proceed through the morass of information in a more informed manner.

Join us for another engaging and informative conversation tonight at 8:00pm!

Well, now what?

After the election results were announced last week, everyone let out a sigh. For some it was a sigh of relief, while for others it was a sigh of disbelief. Cognitive dissonance levels have skyrocketed – particularly here in New York City – and as the vitriol dissipates it will be interesting to see how things play out.

What does the election of Donald Trump mean? What will happen? Will he follow through on his campaign promises?

At this point the only thing I can say for sure is that it won’t be exactly what anyone expects, but I do believe that there is a window for well thought out, peaceful activism to take place that can actually make an impact. All those who feel trodden down by the system have a unique opportunity to unify and to make a difference. Lord know that some of the problems we now face appear insurmountable, but maybe – just maybe – we’re looking at a ‘darkest before the dawn’ phase.

I hope and pray that it doesn’t get much darker…

The Next Leg Up In Gold And Silver?

gold-11-02-2016-2

With paper gold climbing back to the $1,300 area today, some context for these moves is in order. In my article from early October (Bear Raid Sirens Sounding For Gold And Silver – How A Precious Metals Enthusiast Responds) tracking that ugly red candle during the week-long market holiday in China I wrote the following:

Is the bull market over?

No.

What should I do?

You should do what you do whenever something you want goes on sale: buy. Nothing about the investment thesis for gold and silver has changed. Even if risk parity funds are forced to unload low volatility and countercyclical assets in order to compensate for leverage in other asset classes creating a bizarre scenario where risk off doesn’t mean what it usually does, the case for precious metals due to global risks is only growing stronger. In other words, don’t get shook out because of some algorithm driven asset reallocation breakdown that has absolutely nothing to do with the bigger picture. If this makes you want to sell, then you should check your conviction in the original thesis. Don’t get flushed. The weak hands always get forced out before the real move can begin.

I have a feeling that the $1,250 price area is going to look like an incredible buy in a relatively short time. Because the price action is still controlled, we’ll need to see some more constructive action. Silver looks even stronger and has demonstrated the potential to move upward with purpose during this nascent bull market for the precious metals in 2016:
